About NippyIndex

NippyIndex is a free tool that describes water and weather conditions at more than 1,700 UK coastal and inland locations. It brings together interpreted data from meteorological, marine, tidal and bathing-water sources so that swimmers, dippers and paddlers can see, in one place, the factors that shape conditions at a spot they know.

It describes conditions only. It never says whether a location is safe or suitable, and it makes no assumptions about anyone's ability or experience. You can read more about the data and methods behind it on the How NippyIndex works page. NippyIndex is part of NippyDips, a small UK shop for wild swimming gear.

Reporting a problem

If you are reporting something that looks wrong, it helps us a lot if you can include:

We take accuracy seriously and would rather show nothing than show something misleading, so reports like these are genuinely valuable. We are a very small operation, so replies may take a little while, but every message is read.

NippyIndex is an information tool, not a safety service. Please do not use this address to report an emergency or an immediate danger to anyone in or near the water. In an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. For water-safety guidance, rely on bodies such as the RNLI and the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS).

NippyIndex describes water conditions only. It is not safety advice and never implies that any location is safe, accessible or suitable for any activity. Always make your own assessment.
